Erin Cuthbert’s will not be the only Scottish accent in the Chelsea dressing room from Christmas. Chelsea Women have signed Jamie-Lee Napier from Hibernian Ladies, writes Jane Grove.

The talented 19-year-old, who plays at left back or as a winger, and who is also a prolific goal scorer, is expected to make her debut against Reading on January 5 – the same match in which forward Sam Kerr will be unveiled.

Napier, who played for Celtic before joining Hibs, enjoys being a full-back, but admits: “I’m happier playing further up the pitch. I’ve started to add more goals to my game.” With Celtic she won two SWPL cups and a Scottish Women’s cup.

A colleague of Cuthbert’s in the Scottish international side (not to mention Scotland’s U17s and U19s, where she won 19 caps), she has signed for Chelsea Women until 2021.

In 33 appearances over nearly two years for the Edinburgh team, she scored 22 goals and was named last season’s Scottish Women’s Premier League 1 player of the year.

It feels amazing to be a Chelsea player, and I’m delighted to have signed my first professional contract,” she said after putting pen to paper and being welcomed by assistant manager Paul Green. “From being a young girl, it’s been a dream and an aspiration of mine, so I’m delighted that I’ve finally done it with such a successful club like Chelsea.

Napier will add options on the wing for manager Emma Hayes, who described the new signing as “a really bright prospect”. Hayes added: “Her personality, her hard-working spirit and quality will add something to our squad. It’s important that we keep developing younger players and she is one we have identified for the future.”
