Chelsea’s league match against Manchester United has been called off because of Storm Ciara, which is lashing the country with high winds and horizontal rain.
All six Barclays Women’s Super League matches have been cancelled because of the extreme weather, including the Blues’ game against United Women at Leigh Sports Village, which was due to kick off at 4.30pm today.
The safety of players and supporters was cited as the reason for the late postponement.
Manchester City’s Premier League match against West Ham has also been called off, as well as Scotland’s Women’s Six Nations match against England, rugby league games at Huddersfield and Wakefield, as well as horse racing at Exeter, Southwell and Punchestown.
A Manchester City spokesperson said the Premier League game would not go ahead “due to extreme and escalating weather conditions, and in the interests of supporter and staff safety”.
Chelsea Women’s midweek home match is, however, still on. It takes place on Wednesday February 12, when Birmingham City visit Kingsmeadow (kick-off 7pm).
