The grim weather of recent weeks, and the incessant rainfall, has carved up major roads and side streets, with some turning into obstacle courses as vehicles swerve to dodge caverns, hollows and grottos.

Kingston Council, financially strapped after the government removed all central grant funding, is having to face a huge repair bill to keep the streets smooth.

Some of the holes seem big enough to swim in. This colossal cavity is outside The Maypole pub where Ditton Road meets Hook Road, but there are examples all over the borough.
