Nearly 1,000 local residents have stepped forward to help support the community during the coronavirus crisis.

“We have been overwhelmed with the generosity of people and the number of residents wanting to offer their help and support,” said a spokesman for Kingston council.

“We are continuing to work hard to process all the applications. If you haven’t heard from us just yet, thanks for your patience, we will be in touch very soon.”

Kingston Stronger Together, a partnership between Kingston council, Kingston Voluntary Action and Volunteering Kingston, is recruiting volunteers to help do shopping, collect prescriptions and provide assistance to those in need.

Many have already started delivering prescriptions to those who are self-isolating and being a ‘buddy’ to residents who are shielding, calling them at home to keep them company to let them know they are not alone.

Kingston Stronger Together is looking to add to its team of community volunteers those who have specialist skills in social work and occupational therapy.

“If you are a retired or currently unemployed social worker or occupational therapist or have skills and experience in these areas, we would welcome your time and support,” said the spokesman.

“A few hours a week of your time could make a big difference to our residents.

“Tasks could include supporting our services in their contact with vulnerable people, home visiting, telephone advice, shopping, and assistance with correspondence.”
