Poppy, 3, and Sophia, 5, can’t wait to give these Christmas presents to staff and residents of Langley Court Rest Home in Surbiton.

The sisters helped to launch a campaign by newly-formed voluntary group RBKares which aims to give all 2,000 staff in the borough’s 44 care homes a gift to thank them for all their hard work and kindness during the pandemic.

They also want to make sure that any care home resident who does not have a family or friends (over 200 of them) receives a card and present.

Mum Kate Foley, one of the volunteers on the Christmas Kindness for Care Home Staff and Residents campaign, said the girls wanted to make a difference.

The RBKares group was born out of the team of Sewing4Kingston volunteers who produced 45,000 scrubs, face masks and laundry bags in the first lockdown.

Sara Grimshaw, leading the fundraiser, said: “We want to bring light to those who are alone and say thanks to the people who care for them and let them know that their community has not forgotten them.

“The amazing Kingston Care Home staff have looked after our relatives over the last eight months, have entertained them, reassured them when they were anxious when families couldn’t visit, and held their hands for us when we couldn’t.

“We were so inspired by stories of their selfless, courageous work and saddened by the losses we heard about and we felt the need to say a big thank you.”

Sara said RBKares was already getting requests from care homes for Christmas sweaters, CDs, perfume, wine, chocolates and more.

The group, which aims to raise £10,000 for the cause, was also writing to local schools to ask children to make and personalise Christmas cards for staff and residents.
