The extraordinary history of Tolworth’s Toby Jug pub is told in a new book by Surbiton’s Good Life newspaper editor Tim Harrison.

Hello Tolworth, I’m Ziggy tells the story of the launch of David Bowie’s most famous character on February 10, 1972 at the 1930s roadhouse on the A3. It also charts appearances by other bands which would become household names – such as Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Fleetwood Mac, Jethro Tull, The Stranglers, Rod Stewart and Status Quo among others.

Also among numerous nuggets in the 152-page book; the pub’s role in a 1960s Cold War spy scandal, the revelation that it was one of Hitler’s invasion targets, and how John Lennon’s dad proposed to a Surbiton teenager there.

Illustrated with more than 300 pictures and in a numbered limited first edition at £15, Hello Tolworth, I’m Ziggy will be available at Surbiton farmers’ market this Saturday (Sept 18th) – Tim will be signing copies from 9am until 1pm – or the Regency Bookshop in Victoria Road, Surbiton (phone 020 8399 2188).
