Stamford Bridge erupted in the dying seconds of a thrilling match against old rivals Leeds United as a late, late penalty – coolly taken by Jorginho – stole all the points at the death.
A draw would have been a fair result, but Chelsea’s smash-and-grab ensured there was a twist in the tail of this immensely entertaining duel.
It was a game teeming with penalties, though whether all of them should have been awarded by ref Chris Kavanagh is debatable.
Leeds took the lead just before the half hour mark after Raphinha beat Edouard Mendy from the spot; Daniel James having been judged to have been clattered by Marcos Alonso.
The Blues levelled before the break. Alonso provided the cross and Mason Mount slid the ball home, past Illan Meslier.
Chelsea went ahead on 58 minutes as Jorginho took a composed penalty following Tony Rudiger being fouled in the box by Raphinha… all decisions being reviewed (some at length) by VAR.
After Leeds levelled with seven minutes of normal time remaining, it looked set for a draw. Joe Gelhardt had scored with practically his first touch after coming on, seconds earlier, for Raphinha.
Then Rudiger was again felled in the box in the first 60 seconds of five added minutes, and Jorginho went the opposite way for the 3-2 victory.
