Pop down to the Legion and see the poppies.

6,000 adorn the walls and railings of the Surbiton Royal British Legion Club.

This is the second year the knitters and crocheters of the club in Hollyfield Road, Surbiton, have come together to produce an eye-catching display.

There are even more poppies on show this year thanks to many from the previous Remembrance display being saved with more added.

This year, the 20-strong group, made up mostly of family and friends of the club’s youth marching band (which will be leading the Remembrance Sunday service at Surbiton’s war memorial in Ewell Road on November 13), focused on creating two giant Union Jacks – one knitted and one crocheted – for the walls of the building, plus the figure of a Tommy made up of knitted and crocheted black poppies.

Local guides, brownies and cubs wrote the names of those in the armed forces from the area who had died in the First and Second World Wars on to labels which were hung on the railings too.

Anyone who has lost someone from the Royal Navy, British Army or Royal Air Force is also invited to the Legion where they can pick up a label and add it, with their loved ones name, to the railings.

“It is lovely to see how much it is appreciated across the borough,” said Denise Corbett, the organiser of the project. “The comments we have had are wonderful. It makes it all worthwhile.”

Handmade knitted, crocheted and ceramic brooches plus printed poppy bags are available for a donation to raise money for the armed services community from the Legion’s reception.

Denise said anyone was welcome to join the knitting and crocheting group – even if they just want to learn. More details from [email protected]
