STOP PRESS: Emma Hayes doesn’t like ice cream – so she won’t be looking forward to one during her summer break.
However her son Harry, aged five, absolutely loves them – chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, with all the works too – sprinkles, strawberry sauce, wafer and a flake.
“I’d prefer to have a cup of tea to be honest, with you,” said the Chelsea Women’s coach.
However Emma’s thoughts aren’t turning to her summer hols with Harry just yet (pictured with her after last Sunday’s game against Arsenal at Kingsmeadow). There is still the small – or not so small – matter of the last game of the season. Tomorrow’s (Saturday’s) crunch tie against Reading – who have their own battle fighting relegation – will decide who wins the WSL title this season.
Hard on the heels of the Blues are Man U who have to win away from home against Liverpool and hope that Chelsea drop points to turn the tables on their rivals.
Emma is taking nothing for granted.
“Maintaining the focus, the concentration, the consistency is all I have been interested in with them [the players] all week to make sure we are in a position to perform tomorrow; so everybody knows their roles, their tasks and that we are in the best mindset – which we are. I think we do that consistently well.”
Emma praised the “outstanding” performances of her midfielders Erin Cuthbert and Sophie Ingle at the weekend against Arsenal when the Blues won 2-0.
“The challenge I have set for both of them this week is to do it again because consistency is key.”
Emma said she was hoping to see a lot of Chelsea support at the Madejski Stadium (2.30pm kick-off).
“I’m just looking forward to seeing a really, really strong Chelsea fan base in the crowd. We want to encourage the numbers to come and support us – we need it.
“We keep reminding the team we are 90 minutes away from winning the title and all my energies are focused on doing that.”
