Putting out their captains’ year at Surbiton Golf Club, Ciaran Carvalho and Georgina Headley handed a giant £50,000 cheque to two good causes close to their hearts –Surbiton YMCA and LandAid.
The impressive total was raised during SGC’s 130th year by proceeds from an illustrated book about the club’s history, and events which included a charity day auction, bridge drives, raffles, a sponsored London to Brighton bike ride, lunches, dinners, golf roll-ups and tours.
“This money will help young homeless people with move-on grants and hopefully give them opportunities for a brighter future,” said Ciaron, who is also patron of LandAid, the property industry charity.
He, Georgina, and friends and family took part in the LandAid National SleepOut in February last year.
“We thought experiencing first-hand what some young people have to go through and raising funds for a local cause, might resonate with golf club members more if we could speak about the experience.
“Sleeping on concrete in a cardboard box is tough – in the morning there was ice on our sleeping bags,” he added.
Surbiton Golf Club in Woodstock Lane South has a history of impressive fundraising for charities.
Under Ciaran and Georgina’s captaincy last year (March 25-26), SGC also raised money for Sport Parkinson’s (over £20,000 alone), Debra UK, Bright Cancer Care, MND Association – to name but a few.
