It’s an absolute pig, but Surbiton’s farmers’ market has been cancelled this Saturday, because of Storm Dennis.
It’s the first time in the market’s glorious 10-year history that this drastic step has had to be taken, but the ferocious winds that are predicted for the weekend mean some of the 26 stalls might end up in Kingston were it to go ahead.
“This is a first for us, and the decision hasn’t been taken lightly,” said David Jacobson, from the market’s steering group. “We’ll be back on March 21.”
The horizontal rain and strong gusts forecast for Saturday and Sunday are disrupting all normal life in Surbiton, with local sporting fixtures and other outdoor activities also under threat from the storm.
The official Met Office alert about storm-force winds in London and the South East specifies the hours of 10am on Saturday until midnight on Sunday. The market was due to start at 9am on Saturday.
