No wonder Chelsea Women’s right back was smiling as the teams left the pitch on Wednesday night following the Blues’ 2-0 defeat of Birmingham City in the league, to maintain their title challenge, writes Jane Grove.

Hannah Blundell knew she was on the brink of signing a two-year extension to her contract, keeping her at Chelsea FC Women until 2022.

A graduate from the club’s centre of excellence, Blundell has been a first-team regular since making her debut in 2013, and recently reached the milestone of 150 appearances for the Blues.

She put pen to paper at Chelsea’s Cobham training ground, and said: “I’m really excited to sign this new two-year deal with the club.”

The 25-year-old is one of the most popular players at Kingsmeadow – a real fans’ favourite who always makes a point of chatting to supporters, posing for selfies and signing autographs after every game.

“I’ve been here a really long time, so the fact that Emma and Paul still want me here is a great feeling,” she added, referring to manager Hayes and assistant Green.

Hayes said of her right-sided defender: “I’m delighted Hannah has committed another couple of years to our team. She’s Chelsea through and through, she had a tough time with injuries the first part of the season but it’s certainly great for the team that she’s back.

“Hannah’s best years are yet to come and with this commitment from her, it just shows that she sees her best years and future with us; which is a real testament to her team-mates and the staff.”

Winning the double in 2015 was, Blundell says, her finest achievement to date.

“We won the double again in 2018, and that’s one of the reasons I wanted to stay because I want to be pushing for trophies. I want to win trophies and I feel like this is the club for that.”
