Would you like to be part of a Friends of Surbiton Station group to help enhance the building and improve the environment for railway passengers?

Well, you could join an online group being set up by Kingston Council. The council is keen to unite those interested in preserving and enhancing the art deco-style railway station, built in 1937, designed by James Robb Scott and considered one of the finest modernist stations in Great Britain.

“We are very aware that a number of local residents are keen to support our local station and that they would like to meet others who share that mutual interest,” said Surbiton neighbourhood manager James Geach. “In order to help bring these people together we will be launching an online portal on the council’s website in the near future which will allow residents to let us know if they would like to help set up a new Friends of Surbiton Station group.”

Mr Geach said that South Western Railway, which runs the station in Victoria Road, operates a station adoption programme which gives Friends groups the opportunity to work together to improve stations and the travelling experience for everyone.

“Similar groups have adopted stations elsewhere across the country and have worked with South Western Railway to add planters, introduce programmes such as a book swap scheme, help keep stations free of litter and also create community space,” added James.
