The new Thames Concerts season begins this evening with the return of the Halcyon String Quartet.

It has been a popular series of chamber music performance in the borough since 1961, making the most of the excellent acoustics at St Andrew’s church in Maple Road.

Tonight’s concert sees the quartet play Haydn, Korngold, Shaw and the fifth quartet by Leonard Salzedo. Salzedo (best known for his Open University brass theme) enjoyed a remarkable career as a performer, conductor and composer, with his music now enjoying a well-deserved renaissance.
