If you’re missing the World Cup action, don’t despair. Another world championship is taking place this week… right here in Surbiton.

From Wed Aug 5 to Sun Aug 9, the croquet world cup – the MacRobertson Shield, held every four years – is being staged at Surbiton Croquet Club, Alexandra Drive, with England (pictured), Australia, the USA and New Zealand in the finals.

The trophy was first contested 101 years ago. Spectators welcome, free admission. There’s a bar, and club members will be on hand to explain what’s going on. Matches start at 9.30am and continue well into the afternoon.

It’s the first time in 16 years that Surbiton’s prestigious club has hosted the tournament.
