SUMMARY:Meet Author Tim Flower
DESCRIPTION:Published under the pen-name Tim Flower\, lawyer-turned-writer Tim Burton\, a Surbiton resident for over 50 years\, has now published his second novel… and is being interviewed at the cornerHOUSE by Good Life editor Tim Harrison as part of the arts centre’s Meet The Author series. \nHe describes Belatedly Seeking Sarah as “a poignant\, uplifting and gently humorous mystery to do with identity and self-discovery\, which addresses twentieth-century issues and events that continue to resonate today”. \nIt revolves around a 60-year-old\, newly single and successful woman\, who uncovers secrets and skeletons\, tragedies and truths\, that transform her sense of self and the third age of her life. \n“If you like reading real-world fiction or watching the TV series ‘Who Do You Think You Are’\,” says Tim\, “this is the novel for you. The project took me on an enthralling and enlightening journey through a hundred-plus years of history and literally from the Baltic to Brooklyn.” \nThe novel has been rated 5 stars on both Amazon.uk and Amazon.de. A reviewer called it “poignant and uplifting\, with moments of humor and refreshing honesty\, and I loved every bit of it. It felt emotional\, without being too intense\, the perfect read”. \nTim’s first novel\, Fixing Sixty Six\, is a tale of political corruption\, centring on the 1966 World Cup in England\, which a reviewer wrote\, “moves along like a Robert Harris novel” and another described as\, “a crackingly convincing read”. \nThe 69 year-old author moved to Surbiton as a teenager in 1972. \nHis first job was as a sales assistant at the grocers Hudson Stores in Victoria Road (until recently an Abbey National/Santander branch) where\, he says\, in the early days of decimalisation\, he had to wean customers off what they called “real money”. \nHe and his wife\, Frances\, also have long-standing connections with the Isle of Wight\, where much of the novel is set. As an infant\,Tim holidayed in the Island village of Seaview\, when\, unbeknown to him\, his future wife\, Frances\, was attending primary school in nearby Ryde. \nDue to their children being in three different countries\, he and Frances currently divide their time between Surbiton\, the Isle of Wight\, New York and Vancouver. \nBelatedly Seeking Sarah and Fixing Sixty Six are available to buy\, in Kindle and paperback\, from Amazon.

SUMMARY:Agatha Christie and True Crime
DESCRIPTION:Prolific author and historian Dr Jonathan Oates gives a talk to Surbiton & District Historical Society on Agatha Christie and True Crime. \nMany of Agatha Christie’s best-selling detective stories had their basis in reality. ‘Who killed Charles Bravo\, and why?’ asks retired Superintendent Spence in Elephants Can Remember\, referring to an unsolved Victorian murder mystery; one of many allusions to real life crime and criminals in Agatha Christie’s fiction. \nThe infamous Dr Crippen\, Jack the Ripper\, John George Haigh and other real killers\, fraudsters and spies figure prominently in plots covering a timeframe from the 18th century to the 1960s\, showing that Agatha Christie was not only an inspired writer of fiction but had a knowledge of true crime as well. \nThere are even instances where she seems to have anticipated real life crimes\, as in the case of the poisoner Graham Young. The talk examines criminals and their crimes – some well-known\, others largely forgotten – and how they are used in Agatha Christie’s stories. \nThe cornerHOUSE. Bar opens 7pm\, talk starts 7.30pm. £4 visitors. Free to members (£20 per year) www.surbitonhistoricalsociety.org

SUMMARY:Andrew’s Biographer Tells All
DESCRIPTION:The Daily Mail calls it ‘the most devastating royal biography ever written’\, and few would disagree. \nA sell-out crowd is expected when Andrew Lownie\, author of Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York (published by Collins\, and available at Surbiton’s Regency bookshop) is guest speaker at the St Mary’s BookBox\, discussing the rise and fall of the former prince and the impact of his book. \nHe will speak about his research processes\, and the effect publication has had on the Royal Family… and on the author. Unlike other BookBox events at St Mary’s\, this one is being staged in the church itself\, and not in the church hall.

SUMMARY:A talk about Shakespeare's world
DESCRIPTION:Rosemarie Swinfield gives a Shakespearean talk to Surbiton & District Historical Society. \nShakespeare was a country boy from a comfortably off family in Stratford-on-Avon who travelled to the City of London to make his fortune. He is our most famous playwright and yet we know very little about him. However\, we do know a lot about the world he lived and worked in. \nRosemarie’s talk follows him as he navigates dangerous\, violent Elizabethan London\, including the pitfalls an aspiring actor/playwright would encounter in a city of filthy streets\, pickpockets and vagabonds.  \nThe meeting\, at the cornerHOUSE\, starts at 7.30pm\, with the bar open from 7pm. \nVisitors £4. SUMMARY:Meet the Author: Genevieve Marenghi
DESCRIPTION:Genevieve Marenghi’s novel\, No Oil Painting\, is an art heist book with\, as its centrepiece\, Ham House\, where Genevieve worked for many years as a National Trust guide… constructing the plot in odd moments. \nTonight she’s on stage with Good Life editor Tim Harrison in a Meet the Author event. Doors open 7pm. \nLocally based\, she worked on the Financial Times for 11 years. Her mystery thriller is available at the Regency Bookshop\, and copies will be available on the night – signed by the author. \nWith a BA in English and Philosophy\, Genevieve was listed for the inaugural Women’s Prize Trust and Curtis Brown Discoveries award. \nHer writing uses dark humour to probe the difference between our perception of people and their true selves; the gulf between what is said and what is meant. \nShe considers people watching an essential skill for any writer; overheard snippets of conversation or exchanges at bus stops are gold nuggets. \nShe’s been known to follow people to catch the end of a juicy conversation or argument. Women aged over 50 are essentially invisible anyhow\, and she views this as a kind of superpower. \nUnlike her novel’s protagonist Maureen\, she hasn’t used this to commit art theft. Yet. \nMore about the author at Genevievemarenghi.com

SUMMARY:Second World War talk
DESCRIPTION:From a Hard Place to a Rock is the title of Timandra Slade’s Second World War talk to Surbiton & District Historical Society. \nShe explains: “I was born in London to an Australian mother and was adopted as a baby into a fascinating and well-connected military family. \n \n“In a house clearance following my mother’s death I discovered a briefcase containing details of my father’s extraordinary wartime escape after he was captured following the surrender of the 51st Highland Division at St-Valery: his original journal\, maps\, sketches and photographs. \n“My uncle was also captured having been shot at Robecq near St-Venant. He managed to escape from hospital with a fellow patient\, meeting up with his cousin in Spain. \n“Inspired to further research\, in tribute I have brought their stories to life.” \nThe cornerHOUSE. Meeting starts at 7.30pm\, with the bar open from 7pm. Visitors £4. Annual membership of the society is £20.

SUMMARY:Ali Ferguson Talks to Kingston Stitchers
DESCRIPTION:Ali Ferguson will discuss her work\, inspiration\, processes and materials at an evening entitled Cloth Stories\, organised by the Kingston Stitchers group. \n\n\n\n“Stories lie at the very heart of my textile practice\,” said Ali. “I often say that I’m more interested in ‘why’ a textile piece is made than ‘how’. I draw my inspiration from the everyday\, and I’m endlessly fascinated by ordinary people and their stories.” \nShe is drawn to discarded materials\, including old pieces of clothing and domestic textiles\, reasoning that materials which have been previously used\, washed and worn carry their own hidden stories.
