The Friends of Surbiton Station group is now officially open for business!
Anyone interested in helping to preserve and enhance the 1930s art-deco style station should visit www.kingstonletstalk.co.uk/surbiton-station for more information and to register their interest.
“We are very aware that a number of local residents are keen to support our local station and that they would like to meet others who share that mutual interest,” said Surbiton neighbourhood manager James Geach. “In order to help bring these people together we have launched an online portal on the council’s website.”
The station was built in 1937. Designed by James Robb Scott, it is considered to be one of the finest modernist stations in Great Britain.
“Similar groups have adopted stations elsewhere across the country and have worked with South Western Railway to add planters, introduce programmes such as a book swap scheme, help keep stations free of litter and also create community space,” added James.
“Having local people involved in their station creates more pride in the building, reducing anti-social behaviour and improving the travelling experience for everyone.”
Those who express an interest will be invited to an online meeting after which an update will follow in mid-April so a group can be formed in late spring.
