Ninety-four-year-old Second World War veteran Bob Barter is raising money to help refugees fleeing Ukraine by putting on a jazz gig at the Berrylands pub in Surbiton.

The lunchtime gig on Sunday, April 10 by the Bob Barter quintet featuring singer Jenny Howe along with musicians Jimmy Hastings (tenor sax, flute and clarinet), Eric Ford (drums) and Mario Castronari (double bass) as well as Bob on piano, will raise money for the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) which is supplying emergency aid (food, water, shelter and medical assistance) to those in Ukraine and on its borders.

Former Elgar Avenue resident Bob, who may also give his alto sax and clarinet a blast, said he needed to do something to raise money for the appeal.

“The people are in desperate states, and anything anyone can do should be done,” said the lauded musician and composer who saw action as a captain of the Royal Engineers in WWII and who was also part of a peacekeeping force in the Middle East after the war. “Putin is a monster.”

The music is mainstream and modern with melodies by the likes of Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, Henry Mancini and others, plus a composition or two by Bob (including his crowd-pleaser Goal Kick).

Tickets are £15 on the door (half-price concessions available). The gig starts at 12.30pm.
