They’re cool cats! That’s Chelsea Women’s manager Emma Hayes’ verdict on the new players drafted into her side this summer ahead of the first WSL match of the new season.

From strikers Catarina Macario (from Lyon) and Mia Fishel (who Hayes has already dubbed ‘Big Fish’) to experienced defender Ash Lawrence and England reserve keeper Hannah Hampton, the squad has been expanded to compensate for the loss of Magda Eriksson and Pernille Harder to Germany.

Now the stage is set for Chelsea v Spurs at 5.30pm on Sunday at Stamford Bridge, with Hayes relishing the challenge to finally – after four successive poor starts to seasons – winning the opening fixture.

Although the Blues have gone on to be serial title winners in the league, they’ve had to play catch-up for four years after stuttering starts.

“I’m super impressed by the new signings,” said Hayes after confirming that Millie Bright is now club captain. “And everyone is available for selection for the first game – we don’t have any injuries.”

That means Fran Kirby is likely to pair up with Sam Kerr up front on Sunday, while the defence organises to repel former Blue Beth England.
