It’s quite something, hurtling down a precipitous mountain at speeds upwards of 30mph.
But that is what 11-year-old ski racer Jolie Welsh loves doing – and is hoping to do more of – if she can get sponsorship this winter.
Jolie, of Pine Walk, Berrylands, started skiing when she was just two. Skip forward nine years and she has not only won the prestigious eola GBR Series which incorporates five race competitions across England, Scotland and Wales, but she has also won the British Champs in Wales, making her the Female U12 British Champion.
“From a very young age she was quite a natural, with one of the French ski instructors saying that if we left her for a year in La Plagne she would be racing with Red Bull on her helmet!” said proud mum Polly.
Now Jolie is ready to take her skiing to the next level. Her sights are on a spot in the GB Children’s Team but she needs time on snow to train and achieve her goal.
“Sponsorship would make all the difference and really help me to reach the next level,” said Jolie, who is due to live in Bormio, Italy, this winter season, training with Alpine Performance Racing (but keeping up with her schoolwork online when she isn’t hurtling down black runs).
Jolie has already appeared on TV’s Ski Sunday with mentor and coach Chemmy Alcott (pictured with her above) one of Britain’s most successful female racers and four-time Winter Olympian.
Chemmy was full of praise for the youngster.
“It has been my honour to support Jolie’s amazing development as a young ski racer over the past few years,” said the head coach at CDC Performance which runs world class ski race training.
“She is a very special kind of athlete with both talent and drive that is very rare.
“Her results speak for themselves, but her talent goes far beyond just her victories. She is hard working and incredibly focused for someone so young.
“A full season at this point in her career is imperative to her fulfilling her vast potential.”
Chemmy said the moment an athlete starts getting outside investment in their training is the moment when they can really start flying – which is why it was so important to have brands and companies on board.
