Premier League clubs bicker about whether or not to finish the interrupted season, despite many countries deciding there’s no point, and English football’s public relations disaster rolls on. Premier League clubs bicker about whether or not to finish the interrupted season, despite many countries deciding there’s no point, and English football’s public relations disaster rolls on.

Every statement from football governing bodies begins with the insistence that safety of players, staff and spectators is the paramount concern.

Frankly, it should only be news if it wasn’t the No1 priority.

Having to continuously state the blindingly obvious suggests we’re all taken for fools.

It’s like politicians refusing to answer simple questions, and instead parroting the same speech about how wonderful the NHS and key workers are.

While Chelsea, cushioned by its owner’s billions, will emerge from this tunnel with more kudos than many clubs, the question of how football will look in this changed world still hasn’t been addressed.

No queues at turnstiles, no queues at the tube or club shop, no queues at the burger bar outside La Reserve in Fulham Road. Even touts will have to keep their distance.

Staff, stewards and security officers will wear masks and gloves, journalists will sit 6ft apart, Frank Lampard will consult Jody Morris with sign language, and programme sellers will operate behind perspex screens.

The simplest solution would be to abandon this season, and start 2020-21 as if the last year had never happened.

It would be hard on runaway league leaders Liverpool, but just as hard on clubs such as Norwich, Villa, Bournemouth and Watford, whose dreams of dodging the drop were every bit as intense.

There’s no perfect solution, but desperately trying to revive a dead season to benefit sponsors and honour TV contracts seems undignified at best.
