The final round of fixtures in this year’s FA Women’s Super League has shifted forwards 24 hours.

It means that the women’s matches will no longer happen at the same time that the men are playing their title/relegation deciders, giving renewed hope to those who were starting to despair that the authorities would ever take fixture clashes seriously.

Until today, the scheduled last day of the season for the Premier League and the WSL had been the same.

Although no formal reason for bringing forward the last day of the women’s season from Sunday May 12 to Saturday May 11 has been given, the news has delighted those who believe the women’s top flight needs space to grow, rather than being eclipsed by the men’s game.

All the women’s games will kick off at the same time – 12.30pm on Saturday May 11 – with the outcome of the title battle between Arsenal and Man City potentially still in the balance.

Arsenal and Manchester City is a fnal-day fixture… with the possibility that everything could hinge on the outcome.

A graphic illustration of just how far the women’s game still has to progress came at the weekend, when barely 500 turned up to watch Liverpool lose 5-1 to the Gunners, a bitterly disappointing turnout.

Chelsea Women travel to Reading on the last day of the season, with the other fixtures being: Liverpool v Everton, West Ham v Brighton, and Yeovil Town v Birmingham City.

It is anticipated that the second tier of women’s football, the FA Women’s Championship, will also moved all matches to the Saturday.
