Chelsea Women will play in the Community Shield at Wembley later this month as part of a historic double-header.
The women’s team, whose home is Kingsmeadow, Kingston, will face Manchester City Women on Saturday August 29, just hours before the men’s traditional curtain-raiser. However, both matches will be behind closed doors, with no fans attending because of coronavirus rules.
It will be the first Women’s Community Shield since 2008, pitting Barclays FA Women’s Super League Champions Chelsea against the Women’s FA Cup holders. It kicks off at 12.30pm, and is live on BBC One.
It will also be the first game of the new season for Millie Bright, who has just joined Erin Cuthbert, Beth England and Guro Reiten in signing a new contract at the club.
She has been a key figure in defence for the Blues since joining in 2014, and is now on the books until 2023. “It’s a massive honour for a big club like Chelsea to want you to sign again, for the length that I have,” she said. “To stay at a club that I absolutely love to bits; the players, the staff, representing the badge, it’s everything that I’ve ever dreamt of and I couldn’t imagine myself being anywhere else.’
After the women’s game, at 4.30pm, FA Cup winners Arsenal face Premier League champions Liverpool.
“It’s a sign of our commitment to the women’s game and its growth, to have a curtain-raiser that mirrors that of the men, with another high-profile fixture at Wembley,” said FA chief executive Mark Bullingham.
