Chelsea Women’s captain Magda Eriksson is determined to salvage some pride for the club after yesterday’s disappointment in the men’s FA Cup final.

The Blues meet Manchester City this afternoon at Wembley, with 50,000 expected to cheer on the sides.

It’s a special occasion for the Swede. “In 2018 [when she arrived at the club] it was my first big game,” she said.

The old gang is breaking up, with Ji So-Yun, Drew Spence and Jonna Andersson already announced as leaving in the summer. All are expected to play some part in this afternoon’s match, billed as a revenge fixture after City’s win in the Conti Cup at Wimbledon’s new Plough Lane.

“It’s exactly where we want to be as a club, to have the men at Wembley on Saturday and us on Sunday in cup finals,” she said at Friday’s pre-match press conference, still sporting the black eye that she picked up on the final day of the WSL season last weekend during an accidental blue-on-blue clash in the Chelsea goalmouth.

The game is live on BBC1.
