Beware, you could have one of these slapped on your car windscreen tomorrow if you don’t park in the right place or pay the correct fee.

From tomorrow (Tuesday) traffic wardens will be patrolling Surbiton’s streets again making sure parking charges are correctly paid and time limits adhered to.

Parking charges will be imposed in all off-street car parks across the borough from tomorrow too, while they will resume in multi-storey car-parks from May 29 although at a 50 per cent discount at the Bittoms, Cattle Market and The Rose car parks for town centre businesses and workers.

Cllr Hilary Gander, portfolio holder for environment and sustainable transport at Kingston council, said: “As the lockdown restrictions are lifted, and people begin to travel more, it is essential that the council properly manages the different needs of road users, keeps traffic moving and the roads safe for all.

“To this end, as our local businesses begin to reopen, and as the roads get busier, we will be reintroducing parking charges on-street and in our off-street car parks.

“This will apply from Tuesday, May 26 and we ask everyone to park considerately and follow signage as usual. We continue to encourage residents to remain mindful and cautious about travel by only making essential journeys.

“When you do travel, please walk or cycle where possible in order to keep the roads clear for those who need to drive.”

Parking charges and some enforcement activity was suspended from March 25 due in part to a reduced ability to operate normal services, to support those working in the emergency response, others impacted by COVID-19 and the lockdown restrictions.

During this time free key worker and approved volunteer permits have been introduced which are valid until the end of June. Payment plans and a new temporary COVID-19 permit are also available to support those who have ongoing difficulties as a result of the pandemic.
